Many parents in Missouri who have gone through a divorce know that splitting up is not always easy on children. Adjusting to a new routine and a new home life takes time and often comes with obstacles. As parents, however, there are few things you may be able to do to help your children through this transition.

A recent article written by a divorce and parenting coach explains how parents can work together to make their divorce a little easier on their children. The solution, she says, is effective co-parenting through compromise.

Of course, co-parenting with your ex is easier said than done, but here are a few tips to consider when deciding how to raise your children between two households:

  • Consistency is key. Having two sets of rules to live by is not only confusing for children, but it can also create tension when they pit Mom against Dad.
  • Compromise is necessary. It is likely that you and your ex do not agree on every aspect of parenting. However, by having a conversation about what is important to each of you could lead to a compromise that can be carried out in both households.
  • If compromise is impossible, move on. If you and your ex simply cannot reach an agreement on a parenting style, it is important to keep living. Although having different rules at Mom’s and Dad’s can create tension, remember that you and your children are resilient. You will get through it together.

Co-parenting after divorce is not easy, but we hope these tips have given you something to consider as you figure out how to adjust.
