Three motorcycle riders were recently injured as they took part in a poker run to benefit a Joplin VFW post. Motorcycle accidents that occur when bikers travel in groups can have devastating consequences. The crash happened on a stretch of Missouri Highway 96 that formed a part of their route.
According to a report by the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a pickup truck driver was eastbound on the highway when he failed to slow down and stop behind a stationary vehicle. To avoid a collision, the 16-year-old pickup driver swerved into the westbound lane. He smashed into the bike of a 51-year-old participant of the poker run. The collision caused critical injuries to the biker.
A 29-year-old rider on another motorcycle reportedly suffered ankle injuries when his bike overturned as he tried to avoid the initial crash. A third rider then crashed into the wreckage. This 46-year-old man is said to have fractured his ankle, collar bone and arm. The teenager who drove the pickup truck apparently suffered no injuries.
Victims of motorcycle accidents often suffer severe injuries that may require extensive medical treatment. The related medical expenses and possible lost income can cause havoc to the finances of victims. Recovery of damages may be pursued by filing personal injury claims in a Missouri civil court. Along with financial losses, non-economic damages may be included in a list of documented claims. Once liability is established by appropriate proof of negligence, the court will adjudicate the claims before considering a monetary judgment.
