At this time of the year, the Missouri roads are likely more hazardous than usual. With the high levels of traffic on the roadways during the holidays, it is not uncommon to see reports about car accidents that resulted in fatalities. In the aftermath of Thanksgiving weekend, a Lincoln County family has to pick up the pieces and adjust to the fact that a beloved family member will never return.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported the death of the 67-year-old mayor of Silex. An accident report indicates that the fatal crash occurred on Route E shortly after 7 a.m. on the day after Thanksgiving. State police said a 17-year-old driver who was westbound on Route E crossed the center line and smashed into the mayor’s vehicle that was traveling east.
The mayor and his 71-year-old passenger were rushed to a hospital, but only the passenger survived. The mayor was reportedly declared dead upon arrival at the hospital. His passenger’s condition was listed as serious. The driver of the westbound vehicle was transported to a different hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
While the wife, children and grandchildren of the mayor are mourning his death, the financial consequences may be overwhelming. When the negligence of Missouri drivers causes injuries or deaths in car accidents, the injured parties and those who lost loved ones may pursue claims for financial relief. Personal injury and wrongful death claims may be filed against the driver and any separate owner of the vehicle involved. Upon proper proof of negligence, the court may award restitution for documented claims. These typically include financial losses and emotional damages related to the tragedy.
